The South Lake Union line served more than 507,000 riders, far exceeding estimates.

To thank residents and to celebrate the one-year anniversary, the mayor announced free streetcar rides Dec. 12 through Dec. 26, 2008.

Mayor opens Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop trail
Mayor Nickels officially opened the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop Trail, a six-mile loop around Lake Union for pedestrians and cyclists.

"This trail is a legacy for future generations," Nickels said.

"We want to make sure that no family, no person goes hungry in Seattle," said Nickels.

The Mayor's proposed 2009-2010 budget will provide an additional $555,000 in funding for emergency food.
